WHAT TO KNOW FOR YOUR FIRST MULTI-SPORT EVENT

Starting your first duathlon or triathlon is exciting—but before race day arrives, it’s important to know the rules of the sport. Each event comes with specific regulations designed to keep athletes safe, ensure fair competition, and help race day run smoothly. Understanding these guidelines ahead of time will boost your confidence, prevent costly mistakes, and let you focus on enjoying the experience. Below, you’ll find key rules you need to know as you prepare for your first race.

THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN STARTING OUT

This section covers almost everything you need to know going in to your first multi-sport event.

TRANSITIONS, RACE OFFICIALS, AND NON PARTICIPANTS

PROPER TRANSITIONING

When you enter transition for the first time after either the swim or your first run, first thing you should do is put on your helmet and buckle it. Click the link to read more on the proper way to transition.

RACE OFFICIALS

Listen to race officials and volunteers. They are there to help you and arguing or disrespecting can lead to time penalties or disqualification.

NON-PARTICIPANTS

No non-participants or non race officials are allowed inside transition. Why? This is to protect the other athlete’s belongings. Some of these bikes are expensive. Assistance other than that offered by race staff, volunteers, and medical officials may be used.

GEAR, NUMBERS, AND MORE...

HEADPHONES AND COMMUNICATION

Participants may carry a phone but may not use communication devices of any type – including but not limited to cell phones, smart watches and two-way radios – in any distractive manner during the competition. A distractive manner includes but is not limited to making or receiving phone calls, sending or receiving text messages, playing music, using social media, taking photographs or using one- or two way radio communication. Using any communication device in this manner during the competition may result in disqualification.

SHIRTS & RACE NUMBERS

Duathlon and Triathlons require the torso to be covered during the bike and run portion. All athletes are required to wear race numbers at all times during the run. Numbers must be clearly visible at all times. Numbers may not be altered in any way that prevents clear identification.

*DO NOT TRANSFER YOUR NUMBER TO ANY OTHER ATHLETE. THE PENALTY IS DISQUALIFICTATION AND ONE YEAR SUSPENSION FROM USAT MEMBERSHIP.
HOW TO MASTER THE SWIM!

TIME TRIAL vs ELITE WAVE MASS START

Most Run Toledo events use a time trial start.  You will be given instructions by race staff on how many per group will start together which can range from anywhere from 1 -5 at a time. Faster swimmers start earlier, with slower swimmers starting later, which helps prevent congestion and accidental contact in the water. If you’re new or unsure, it’s recommended that you start toward the back. The Sylvania Triathlon also offers an Elite Wave Mass Start, where all athletes who choose this option begin together in the water at the same time, followed by the time trial waves. This mass start is intended for the more seasoned swimmer and should be taken seriously.

THINGS TO REMEMBER

Your swim time does not begin until you enter the water when released by the timer. When swimming, remember to swim around the outside of the buoys on the swim course. Swim volunteers may tap you to get you back on course. You may rest on any of the buoys or kayaks on the swim course but they cannot move you forward.

Swimmers must wear the provided swim cap. If there are allergy concerns please speak with a race official prior to the race. All swimmers must be able to swim un assisted with items like a swimming buoy.

THE DO'S & DONT'S OF BIKING

HELMETS

Helmets must be worn and securely fastened at all times while in possession of your bike. This means from the time you remove your bike from the rack at the start of the bike leg, until after you have placed your bike on the rack at the finish of the bike leg.

DRAFTING

Drafting is not allowed! Once an athlete enters the draft zone of another cyclist there is only one exit and that is out the front.

PASSING

Athletes must ride right and only move left to complete a legal ‘pass’ and must not block athletes attempting a legal pass. Passing right is not allowed. Do not complete a pass unless the athlete is highly confident in their ability to complete the pass in the allotted amount of time.

MORE RULES AND DOCUMENTATION

There are a numerous amount of rules and regulations and we hope we have covered the basics. For those who are serious about getting competitive with their Duathlons and Triathlons we encourage you to read the USAT competition rulebook. Although it is a heavy read every question you might have can be answered there.
